Integrated Public Number Database (IPND)
The IPND is an industry-wide database that contains information related
to all listed and unlisted public telephone numbers in Australia, regardless
of the service provider. While it is maintained by Telstra, access and
use of the IPND by industry is governed by an Australian Communications
Industry Forum (ACIF) Code of practice, registered with the Australian
Communications Authority (ACA). Data users (Carridge Service Providers
and public number directory producers) must register with the IPND Manager
to gain access to the IPND data. In accordance with the Telecommunications
Act, the IPND can only be used for a number of specific purposes. If a
phone company tells you it is registering your new number with directory
enquiries, make sure you understand whether it means it is listing you
in the Australian White Pages, or has simply submitted your number to
the IPND. Sensis (owned by Telstra) who operate the White Pages, do NOT
automatically place every number in the IPND in their directory enquiry
system.
